Foxtrot 1 Trip Update Day 14 – Shandy, Mate

Success!! We tagged a turtle today.

Hours of struggling and near misses finally paid off, and the Foxtrot fleet worked together to catch and tag a turtle. Jess, Lily, Elliot and Shandy followed a turtle for at least an hour this morning. Lily finally grabbed it and pulled to the surface, but lost hold before the dinghy could get there. Sam, Nick and Garreth also followed a turtle for nearly 20 minutes, before finally letting it go. Finally, Desda, Alyssa and Nathan spotted a turtle and all factors came together to catch a turtle! Everyone was really excited! We laid it on its back to calm it down, then proceeded to take measurements of its carapace (shell), and tagged it for future data collection and tracking.  It was such a unique experience to get to handle one of these beautiful – and huge! – creatures of the sea.

The second highlight for the day was our night sail!  After dinner we upped anchor and headed into the channel for a fun challenge. There’s something magical about cruising through the darkness under a starry sky.  We all took a little time to admire the night sky and full moon as it reflected off the water.  Once we made it to our destination for the night, everyone was quick to bed after an adrenaline-filled day!
