Foxtrot 1 Trip Update Day 3 – Shandy Buckley, Mate

As of today, all Open Water SCUBA dive students in Foxtrot 1 have succeeded in passing their first set of diving skills! It was a strange and wonderful feeling to breathe underwater for the first time, seeing fish in their natural environment.

We are moored in the beautiful Pirates Bight on Norman Island, where Back Beard the Pirate once hid his fleet. Norman Island was actually inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel Treasure Island, and rumor has is there is still treasure hidden somewhere on its coasts!  The beginning divers learned their skills off the white sand beach in the protected waters at the head of the bay, while the advanced divers and non-divers enjoyed a hike to the Pirates lookout, and an afternoon snorkel in the caves near the mouth to the bay. Both groups soaked up the natural beauty of their new environment and enjoyed a hot sunny day in the British Virgin Islands. The evening concluded with a lesson on fish and an early night in preparation for a big day tomorrow of diving, snorkeling, and sailing.
